students protest at CPUT

Cape Peninsula University of Technology is the only university of technology in the Western Cape Province. It has over 29 000 students.

CPUT this year protest for various issue such as an increase tuition fee for 2010 and poor maintain facilities. This has cause vandalise and disruption of class at CPUT. The students that were protesting have damage items such as tables, chairs compute and lots more. The staff and management find it very difficulty to do their job properly because the facilities or equipments were damage by the students.

The first protest was in April when the student protest for poorly maintained facilities. Students were demanding for more television, stoves, fridge and washing machine. It was not as violence as the second protest. The second was in August 2009 and the students express their anger over the tremendous increase in registration fees for 2010. The students have to pay on upfront tuition fees for R 3000 to R 5000 for students that live in residences and R 1800 – R 3000 for those who live off campus. The students are complaining that they don’t have that amount of money. They want their voice to be heard.

CPUT had a bad reputation this year because there were so many protests. From now on people will have a negative attitude toward CPUT. Parents will send their children to other university of technology around South Africa but not CPUT.

I think it would be better if CPUT identify a spokesperson for the institution to avoid misunderstanding. Management, staff and students must be communicate on time.
